It never ceases to amaze me how trying to rectify one “mistake” can open the door to new possibilities. Sometimes I will try creating a fuseable piece in expectation that it will create a certain result. After baking in the kiln for 10=14 hours, when I come back the next day to enjoy the fruits of the labor, sometimes the fruits, that begin from a mindset, can end up a bit spoiled.

After years of working in fused glass, I’m realizing that nothing has to be considered the “end result”. Remelting a piece, putting paint over areas that need to have a colorful lift, creating a bend for movement, adding pieces in the cold working process to embellish the overall look – these all help to wake me to realize that the creative process continues in many forms. The heat of the kiln, in the firing , (of which I do not have total control), at 4 AM, in my “creative sleep” state, and even…during the conscious waking part of the day!

Learning to see what is, and training myself not to be stuck in thinking what should have been, ultimately allows for freedom in the creative process. What can be, is an infinite movement of creation, of which I am very happy to be a part.

My son recently expressed an interest in learning my craft, so I jumped at the chance to fill him in on the details of some of the fine points of my 42 years of experience. He is into the CLE idea, so we made some etched glasses, which in turn inspired a fun T-shirt. And some ornaments to boot. Then the process of where to sell all of this new merchandise became a job itself. Holiday craft shows of every level of expertise, from selected juried shows, to neighborhood shows where fruits and vegetables were the main draw! It has been a changing scene each week, going to the different craft venues, and seeing how the work fits in to people’s desires, and hopefully brings home the results that help pay for our weekly experimentation.

Here’s a picture of the table setup.

I have already gotten a return call from one of the schools at Case that liked what they saw, so it looks like setting up shop was a wise move.

The sampling of free food from all of the caterers certainly made the event more palatable!

I recently installed work at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport by the Information Counter. Three separate cases – one with a saxophone sculpture, one with 5 “frit” vases, and one large case with many glass instruments. The colors and images looked great, and comments were quite favorable. Brian Jones also installed 5 of his jazz paintings on the wall behind.

Upon driving home, and contemplating the show, I realized how the creation of many of these works had to do with the serendipity of creation – pieces that are unique may sit in my studio for a while, and then the light bulb flashes, and I begin to incorporate them into a new material reality. Creating objects in one work day, and pairing them with other parts of my works another day – the continuum of the evolution of the series unfolds. Seeing so many of the finished works assembled, allowed me to step back from the process, and realize that it is in the rolling up of sleeves, and nurturing the “wonder” of creation, when the art completes itself, that the bigger picture is seen.
